I’m sitting on the balcony when Claire finds me the next morning, a cup of coffee in her hand. Her black eyeliner is smudged around her eyes, making the blue look more vibrant than ever. I can see the dark circles beneath her eyes and start to worry that she needs more than just a night of fun with her friends.

As Claire puts her feet up on the railing, looking down as clouds of fog roll across the city, I take a deep breath.

She isn’t going to like what I’m about to say, but I think it’s the best solution for her right now. I don’t want her to miss out on living her life and it feels like I’m holding her back.

“Claire, we need to talk.”

She raises an eyebrow as she looks at me over the rim of her coffee mug. Though she looks calm, I’ve gotten good at seeing the worry in her eyes. She thinks she’s hiding it well, but I can see it every time she looks at Cameron.

When I look at him, I see my dead sister. When she looks at him, she sees her dying brother.

More often than not, I wonder how she has the strength to keep it all together. She doesn’t ask for anything from anybody and she works two jobs while putting herself through school.

Not once, in the weeks I’ve known her, has she complained about her situation in life. If she is going to complain, it is about how unfair her youngest brother’s life is.

Even then, she doesn’t mention it much.

It’s in the middle of the night, when she wakes up crying, that I realize how deeply she is hurting.

I want to do whatever I can to take away her pain. I want to tell her that I’m falling head over heels for her. I want to protect her from anything that would threaten her.

Yet, I can’t tell her that I’m falling for her. She doesn’t need another obligation to deal with on her shoulders.

I can’t take away her pain either.

That leaves trying to protect her the best way I know how.

“What do we need to talk about?” she asks, glancing over her shoulder where Cameron is being picked up by my driver for school.

“I’m going to be cutting back your hours. Every evening, I will be here to take care of Cameron.”

She puts her coffee down. “Why are you cutting back my hours? I thought I was doing a good job with Cameron, so I have to admit that I’m a little bit confused.”

“You’re doing a great job, but you’re only twenty-three. Being a mother to a child struggling with the loss of his family can’t be what you want out of life.”

Her eyes narrow and she grips the arms of her chairs as she sits upright.

“Let’s be clear about something, Gabriel. I’m only twenty-three, but I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t want to be. I love Cameron. I love taking care of him and getting to spend time with him.
